Paws for Consideration

Take a Dog or Cat home for a sleep-over

The main goal of the Geogia SPCA is for all our rescued pets to find their forever homes. To help us achieve this, we have introduced the "Paws for Consideration" program to help potential adopters learn whether a particular pet is a good fit for their home.

Qualified adopters will be able to take home a dog or cat for a few days with no obligation. This time may not give you all the answers, but we think it will help more cats and dogs find the perfect home, reducing the trauma to both animals and humans when a return to the shelter is necessary.

How does the program work?

This program is designed for pets that have been spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated (usually at least 6 months of age). We do not let puppies go because they usually have not received all of their vaccinations, and they could be exposed to disease when taken out of the center.  Adopters must still meet all adoption requirements and must be prepared to leave a drivers' license number with us before they can participate. We will provide all necessary supplies (crate, leash, litter box, collar, etc.) and food for the visit.

If all goes well, the adopter returns and completes the adoption paperwork. If it isn't a match made in heaven, we'll work with you to see what was missing and didn't meet your expectations.

Finding your new best friend might happen quickly, or it might take time.

While we believe this program is very helpful, sometimes it takes dogs and cats a while to settle in at a new home. You might not see the true personality of the new pet for a good while, but we hope that being able to have an initial multi-day visit with them in your home will go a long way in determining if they are a good fit.
